The Dean of Students is a key member of the culture team charged with creating a positive school culture, a well-disciplined school environment, and supportive home-school connection. The Dean of Students promotes positive behavior and oversees student discipline. Through language, actions and decisions, the Dean of Students should demonstrate the belief that all students can learn at a high level and maintain an unwavering focus on results. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
I. DEVELOPING STUDENTS’ CHARACTER AND DISCIPLINE
-
Maintain high expectations and implement programs that teach students DLA’s core values, leadership habits, positive culture, and school expectations
-
Ensure that all students know and abide by the school rules and norms outlined in the Student Handbook
-
Keep accurate student discipline records including the documentation of all parent/guardian conferences, suspensions, and phone calls for behavior using behavior tracking system
-
Oversee community mentoring organizations to support students’ growth and development of leadership skills
II. POSITIVE SCHOOL CULTURE
-
Support staff and students in establishing a positive, joyful, and structured school culture based on DLA’s School Culture and PBIS model
-
Be present and visible during school hours to ensure a positive school environment
-
Supervise daily breakfast, lunch, arrival, and dismissal to ensure a positive and orderly school culture at these times
-
Support the orientation of new students and families before the start of the school year to emphasize the responsibilities of parents, teachers, and students
III. STUDENT SUPPORT
-
Implement proactive supports and restorative practices to remove barriers to learning due to behavior issues and social adjustment
-
Develop student success plans for Tier 2 and Tier 3 students aligned to individual student needs.
Plans will include behavior goals, targeted interventions, and incentives -
Monitor effectiveness of Tier 2 & 3 interventions by analyzing behavior data and soliciting teacher feedback
IV. TEAM COLLABORATION

Serve as a member of the School Culture Team, PBIS Team, and Leadership Team

Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other related service providers to support and provide related services to students
Provide consultation to teachers in the areas of effective classroom management teaching strategies and modifications to implement with students with behavior needs

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
I.EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree
II. EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Mentoring and advising others
-
Proven track record of closing the achievement gap in urban setting

Highly effective writing, oral communication, and interpersonal skills
-
Effective use of organizational tools and computer programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
